A recent study found that chiropractic care can improve sinus function and return the sense of smell.
The study, published in the summer 2009 Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, conducted a case study of an 11-year-old girl who had suffered from persistent chronic sinusitis that had resulted in the loss of smell for a year.
Sinusitis causes build-up of mucus in the nasal cavity that restricts the function of the olfactory cells that give people their sense of smell.
When medications failed to work, her family decided to try chiropractic treatment. After three months of chiropractic care, the girl’s sense of smell had returned completely and her sinus function was normal.
According to the researchers, four years later, the patient receives chiropractic treatment once per quarter remains symptom free.
The patient’s chiropractor found that her spine was misaligned causing her nervous system to malfunction. According to the study, the patient received temporary relief after her first week of care, which included three visits.
